On May 4, 1999, the song was released as the first single from Astro Lounge, written by Greg Camp and produced by Eric Valentine. After the band’s record label, Interscope, demanded more songs that could be released as singles, the song was one of the last ones composed for Astro Lounge.
Camp drew musical inspiration from modern artists such as Sugar Ray and Third Eye Blind while writing it, with the goal of creating a “anthem” for outcasts. The song has a more radio-friendly approach than Smash Mouth’s debut album Fush Yu Mang (1997), which had a more ska punk style.

Music critics commended the song’s musical improvement from Fush Yu Mang as well as its infectious tone, and it earned mostly positive reviews. At the 42nd Grammy Awards, it was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Critics have applauded “All Star” in subsequent reviews, with some naming it one of the finest songs of 1999. The song hit internationally, reaching the top ten in Australia, Canada, and the Billboard Hot 100, as well as reaching the Billboard Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 charts.
The music video for the song contains characters from the superhero film Mystery Men (1999), which featured “All Star” heavily. Following many film performances, most notably in the aforementioned Mystery Men and, later, the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, the song became widespread in popular culture (2001).
It resurfaced as an online meme in the 2010s, and from 2017 to 2021, it was one of the most-streamed rock songs in the United States.
The Composition
The song “All Star” is in F major and has a speed of 104 beats per minute. It’s been categorized as alternative rock and power pop by critics.
In a 2017 interview, Camp indicated that the stripped-down song will allow him to explore numerous layers of meaning, including the social war cry, sports anthem, fandom validation, poetic lyricism, sweeping melody, inclusivity, artistic music videos, and more.
Camp viewed the song as “a daily validation that life is, in general, good,” which he defined as a Smash Mouth “custom.”
According to him, the band read fan mail from kids, parents, and instructors thanking them for making “happy and lighthearted” music on a regular basis. Furthermore, according to Camp, the second verse is about climate change and the hole in the ozone layer.
Music Video
The accompanying music video, directed by McG, features cameos by William H. Macy, Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Paul Reubens, Kel Mitchell, Janeane Garofalo, Doug Jones, and Dane Cook as figures from the superhero film Mystery Men, which incorporates the song heavily.
Their appearances in the video are mostly based on stock footage from the movie; in all other instances, the characters were played by body doubles and shown from behind.
The video begins with Mystery Men characters recruiting new members, with the group rejecting several candidates until showing interest in Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell.
In addition to sequences from Mystery Men, the rest of the film concentrates on Harwell completing other feats (such as rescuing a puppy from a burning building and turning over a fallen school bus).In honor of its 20th anniversary, the music video was redone in HD and subtitles were added in June 2019.
